This past week has been hectic but awesome. My dad's birthday was last Thursday and I had some extra leave from work I needed to use up by the end of the year so I took two days off work to celebrate with him.
I met my parents at the town in between ours (an hour drive for each of us) to do some outlet shopping. My dad actually enjoys shopping because he really likes watching people. He has taken us to crowded malls, parades, sporting events for years and he just loves it. Since my mom is in a cast and can't put any weight on her leg with the broken ankle, they borrowed a wheel chair for the trip. She was able to crutch her way through a few stores but when we got to the outlet mall I wheeled her around.
We enjoyed shopping and lunch and then headed back to my house for ice cream cake and burgers (dad's choice for dinner). After dinner, my dad and I headed out to a bar to watch the Steelers game. Joey and my friend Lisa were supposed to go with us but they were too tired and both had to work early the next morning. It was fun to have a night out with just my dad and I - that doesn't happen too often. Since my mom isn't really a football fan, I set her up with my netflix instant and let her watch whatever she wanted (I don't have cable which is why we couldn't watch the game at home in the first place). My dad and I ended up staying until the 2 minute warning at the end of the game because it took that long for us to feel content with the score of the game.
The next day, my parents and I headed out for some more shopping. The original plan was to do sight seeing in DC but I wasn't sure how easy (or not easy) it would be to take my mom around in the city in a wheel chair. We opted to hit up another outlet mall instead. We had a good time shopping and eventually made it back to my house for some more ice cream cake before they hit the road to get home.
My dad proclaimed that it was the best birthday ever. :) It was also a big birthday since he hit the big 6-0! He also retires in a few short weeks!!
