Despite the logistical problems during the race this weekend, I decided I'm really glad that I ran it. I had been seriously slacking since the marathon and needed the boost from that race. It was the furthest I've ran since the marathon and I was able to run it much faster than I thought I could at this point. I guess I still have some left over fitness from the marathon. Either that or the longest taper of all time was helpful. heh.
Lets look back at how horrible my November shaped up. My total mileage for the month was 35 miles. Sad, but true. I took 8 days off following the marathon since I got so sick. I wanted to make sure I was recovered before I got back out there. Then I got lazy. I ran only during my lunch break and only 5 miles at a time. Most weeks I got out for two runs but one sad week (when I had work training for two days) I only got out for one. I guess I needed a break. I was supplementing these low-mileage weeks with some core work and weight training at home so I guess I wasn't a complete slug.
Another positive from the race is that I have another race buddy. My SIL's friend just got into running and racing and I'm certain she's caught the fever. She raced a 5k in November and then did the 5k at the race on Saturday (though they had to walk a portion due to the issues). She tried to switch to the 15k but the organizers didn't get back to her (even though she asked prior to the deadline for switching). She is also registered for her first half marathon!! She will be doing the National Marathon on March 17th. (She asked if I would be doing this race but I will still be on my honeymoon, so the answer is no).
Her and I have known each other for years but we finally exchanged numbers at the race on Saturday. She was a bit riled up about not being able to run during some of the 5k so she asked if I waned to run an 8k with her this weekend. We had two options but both ended up deciding not to race this weekend.
I'm thrilled that I'll have somebody to head to some local racees with in the future and that I can offer support and encouragement to a new runner!
In hindsight, I guess the run wasn't a complete waste of my time... and based on other race reports I've read, my experience wasn't all that bad.

I love that you got good things out of the race! And spreading the fever is always a good thing :)
Yeah, I mean, it wasn't a total loss. If i were to go back in time, I probably wouldn't sign up for it, but I had an ok race running-wise. It can always be worse!
Yeah to having a friend to race with!
35 miles sounds like a great month to me...but I am SUPER lazy and out of shape. :)
Sometimes a prolonged taper is just what your body needs! :0)
